Peculiarities of search and work with the documents

The documents you are interested in may be in a different Archive. Not all information is found in Modern Moldova, Some information may be maintained in the Archives of neighboring states because of the historical alteration of territory due to various political and national changes. So depending on the various administrative and territorial divisions which occurred at the time you are researching, it is necessary to first identify the exact place of needed documents.

For example: in Bessarabia the Central Archives was only created in the year 1815 by the Bessarabian regional government. However, there are also documents of that government for the years 1808-1815.

In 1992, after the independence of Moldova, the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova accepted the Law about the Archives of Moldova which established a new structure and composition of funding, maintaining the work, and the collection and preservation of the documents. Today in the Archives of Moldova there are about 3.5 million books, as well as a hundred million documents from the XV century to our days. And you need to find out some documents among them...

But not all documents have been preserved because of numerous wars; fires and floods in the various buildings where documents were housed; and losses which occurred during periods of time when part of a territory belonged to different states; all contributed to a poor preservation of documents by local Archives. Due to these circumstances, it is not always possible to find absolutely all papers for making a genealogical tree. The main sources available are the metrical books which have been preserved; although these are not available for all churches. In this case we have to find others sources to help you get the needed information (local census, legal organizations, land distribution records, and so on).

Depending on the history of the territory of your search, the documents we find may be written in different languages (old Russian, German and others). Additionally, older documents are written using the cursive which was used during the corresponding century which are often difficult to read. Below you can see several examples of parts of documents that we might work with as we prepare information for you.
